How do chickens mate and reproduce ?

Hens lay an egg almost every day, but before that egg can hatch, the egg must be fertilised by the cock. But how does that actually happen?

Well, the hen squats down and the cock gets on her back. It is a delicate balancing exercise for the cock, but once he has found his balance he grasps the hen’s feathers so she can’t run away. Then he presses his sexual organ (penis) against her cloaca, through which the sperm cells are transferred to the hen. The cock can be quite rough with the hens, but doesn’t cause them any real harm: which is a good thing!
