How many eggs is a hen able to lay in a week ?

Several factors come into play here:

  • The age of the hen
  • The breed of chicken
  • The amount of light each day

A hen does not start laying eggs until she reaches the age of about 20 weeks. Exactly when this will happen involves a bit of guesswork. Her comb and wattles redden a few days before she lays her first egg. This means that she is nearly ready to lay an egg for the very first time.

The number will increase over the months to come, reaching about 5 eggs a week when the hen is 1 to 2 years old.

The number of eggs she lays also depends on her breed. Some breeds lay more than others.

Another important factor is the daily amount of light. Hens lay fewer eggs in the winter, because in the winter there is less daylight than in the summer.
